Dr. Upain Kumar Bhatia is an accomplished academician and researcher with 27 years of teaching, research, and consultancy experience in Civil Engineering. He completed his B.Tech (Hons.) and M.Tech (Distinction) from REC Kurukshetra, followed by a Ph.D. on Scour around Abutments, where he developed an innovative scour protection device, now a granted patent. His patent titled “Projected Lip as a Scour Protection Device for Bridge Abutments” (Patent No.: 351563) was granted in November 2020.
Dr. Bhatia’s expertise includes flow visualization, bridge hydraulics, and scour mechanisms, and he has developed several indigenous laboratory setups, including Hydrogen Bubble Flow Visualization system and a Low Reynolds Flume. He has published 45 research papers, delivered 25 invited lectures, and completed 27 national-level FDPs/short-term courses. A life member of ISTE, ISH, IEI, IWRS, and VPP, he was honored with the ISTE Best Teacher Award (2021).
He has organized national conferences and FDPs and provided consultancy for government and private agencies, including flood protection studies on the River Yamuna and hydraulic assessments for the Ahmadalpur Run-of-River Project. Currently, he leads the Department of Civil & Mechanical Engineering and serves as Dean Academic Affairs, contributing significantly to academic excellence, research growth, and institutional development.
